Baccharis pilularis - Holodiscus discolor Shrubland
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.34394.CEGL003192
Western Ecology Working Group of...  0 This shrubland association is currently only known from Point Reyes National Seashore in California, and the following description is based on occurrences there. Additional information will be added as it becomes available. Stands are found at low elevations (58-295 m [190-962 feet]) on 16- to 31-degree slopes with southeast to north-northwest aspects. This association is found on the middle third to the entire convex to concave slopes. Soil textures range from medium to very fine sandy loam to moderately coarse, sandy loam from sandstone. This is a mesophytic association that, if found on southerly exposures, is usually found on concave slopes. Stands of this shrubland vary in structure from less a meter to 2-5 m tall. This association is dominated by <i>Baccharis pilularis</i> and <i>Holodiscus discolor</i> and usually includes <i>Toxicodendron diversilobum, Frangula californica (= Rhamnus californica), Rubus ursinus</i>, and <i>Diplacus aurantiacus (= Mimulus aurantiacus)</i>. <i>Festuca rubra</i> may be a common grass, and <i>Quercus agrifolia</i> may also be very common as a low wind-swept shrub. A variety of other species may be found including <i>Corylus cornuta, Festuca californica, Lonicera hispidula, Eriophyllum stoechadifolium, Heracleum maximum (= Heracleum lanatum), Stachys bullata, Umbellularia californica, Symphoricarpos mollis, Clinopodium douglasii (= Satureja douglasii)</i>, and <i>Pteridium aquilinum</i>. This association appears to occur adjacent to wooded or forested alliance stands and may represent the transition between the ~<i>Baccharis pilularis</i> Shrubland Alliance (A0836)$$ and various coastal forests of <i>Quercus agrifolia, Umbellularia californica</i>, and <i>Pseudotsuga menziesii</i>. Such common shrubs in this association as <i>Corylus cornuta</i> and <i>Holodiscus discolor</i> are also common associates of these forest alliances. Many individuals of the aforementioned trees are stunted in these stands, the result of salt-laden winds.

accession code: VB.CC.18182.MAGNOLIAVIRGINI
Southeastern Ecology Working Gro...  0 This plant association comprises small ravine-bottom seepage-fed bayheads of the western part of the East Gulf Coastal Plain. The canopy is dominated by Magnolia virginiana, Nyssa biflora, Magnolia grandiflora, and Liriodendron tulipifera. The shrub stratum is dominated by Ilex coriacea and Viburnum nudum var. nudum, and also contains Persea palustris, Illicium floridanum, Morella cerifera (= Myrica cerifera), Morella caroliniensis (= Myrica heterophylla), Leucothoe racemosa, Lyonia lucida, and Itea virginica. Principal herbs are Solidago patula var. strictula (= Solidago salicina), Woodwardia areolata, Osmunda cinnamomea, Viola X primulifolia, and Carex leptalea. Other herbs may include Carex lurida and Peltandra sagittifolia. Sphagnum sp. may be abundant.

Baccharis pilularis / Nassella pulchra Shrubland
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.34351.CEGL003194
Western Ecology Working Group of...  0 This shrubland association is currently only known from Point Reyes National Seashore in California, and the following description is based on occurrences there. Additional information will be added as it becomes available. Stands are found at low elevations on the mid to upper third of usually on undulating slopes (14-45°) with east-southeast to southwest aspects. Soil textures range from moderately fine clay loam to medium to very fine sandy loam and are from shale or sandstone origin. In the Marin Headlands unit of Golden Gate, where this association occurs commonly, these stands occupy the south-facing ridgelines of spur ridges where grazing kept the <i>Baccharis</i> from invading for many years. Currently, many of these stands are being more rapidly colonized by <i>Baccharis</i> as a result of reduced grazing. There is probably a dynamic relationship between soil type (xeric fine-grained, but relatively shallow) and disturbance (more frequent disturbance from grazing reduces <i>Baccharis</i>), which if shifted will result in either more grass or more <i>Baccharis</i> in these stands. This shrubland forms an intermittent to continuous herb layer and an open to intermittent shrub layer 1-2 m tall. This is an open scrub-steppe dominated by <i>Baccharis pilularis</i> and characterized by the bunchgrass <i>Nassella pulchra</i>. There is a variety of other species that may be found in this association, including <i>Achillea millefolium, Aira caryophyllea, Vulpia myuros, Plantago lanceolata, Lolium perenne ssp. multiflorum (= Lolium multiflorum), Pseudognaphalium californicum (= Gnaphalium californicum), Anagallis arvensis, Galium</i> sp., <i>Avena barbata, Erodium</i> sp., <i>Hypochaeris</i> sp., <i>Chlorogalum pomeridianum, Sonchus</i> sp., and <i>Danthonia californica</i>. Species contributing to minor amounts of cover vary and may include <i>Artemisia californica, Agrostis</i> sp., <i>Briza minor, Bromus carinatus, Castilleja brevistyla, Dichondra donnelliana, Eschscholzia californica, Eriogonum latifolium, Grindelia stricta, Lotus</i> sp., <i>Madia</i> sp., <i>Marah fabaceus, Pteridium aquilinum, Rubus ursinus, Rumex acetosella, Sanicula crassicaulis</i>, and <i>Silene gallica</i>. This shrubland association is often found adjacent to <i>Baccharis</i> and <i>Toxicodendron diversilobum</i> associations.

Elymus lanceolatus - Phacelia hastata Herbaceous Vegetation
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.19424.ELYMUSLANCEOLAT
Western Ecology Working Group of...  0 The association is a very narrowly defined community, unique to the Centennial Valley Sandhills in southwestern Montana. Elevation ranges from 2000-2135 m. Sites are active sand dunes and blowouts. Substrate is sand. The sparse to moderately dense vegetation of this seral community is dominated by the medium-tall perennial graminoid Elymus lanceolatus, with 5-25% cover or higher. Sparse cover (1-20%) of other species may be present, such as the shrubs Ericameria nauseosa (= Chrysothamnus nauseosus), Tetradymia canescens, grasses Achnatherum hymenoides (= Oryzopsis hymenoides), Hesperostipa comata (= Stipa comata), and forbs Eriogonum ovalifolium var. purpureum, Linum perenne, Psoralidium tenuiflorum (= Psoralea tenuiflora), and the characteristic species Phacelia hastata. Diagnostic of this association is the dominance of Elymus lanceolatus and the presence of Phacelia hastata in the herbaceous layer.

Artemisia arbuscula ssp. arbuscula / Leymus salinus ssp. salmonis Shrub Herbaceous Vegetation
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.25950.ARTEMISIAARBUSC
Western Ecology Working Group of...  0 The plant association is reported from the southern end of the Lemhi Range, Idaho, within the Beaverhead Mountains ecoregional section. The plant association occurs within a region of cool, arid climatic conditions. The average annual precipitation is 10-12 inches. The association occurs in lower slope positions, on relatively steep, northwest-facing slopes, at 5200-6000 feet elevation, on limestone parent materials. Soils are poorly developed, thin and rocky. Little information is available regarding the structure and composition of this association. The dwarf-shrub vegetation is dominated by Artemisia arbuscula. Pseudoroegneria spicata and Leymus salinus ssp. salmonis are codominant in the herbaceous layer and usually abundant, often exceeding 50% cover. No additional information is available on the species composition of the dwarf-shrub plant association.
