This shrubland association is currently only known from Point Reyes National Seashore in California, and the following description is based on occurrences there. Additional information will be added as it becomes available. Stands are found at low elevations on the lower third to ridgetops of 18- to 35-degree, southwest- to northwest-facing slopes. Soil textures range from moderately fine silty clay loam to coarse loamy sand. This association typically occupies the coastal terrace and coastward sides of the area. Rubus ursinus is a common colonizer of moist areas in this zone, and this association is indicative of a slightly cooler and moister setting than ~Baccharis pilularis / Annual Grass-Herb Shrubland (CEGL003183)$$. Under equivalent moisture conditions, it also indicates a somewhat more advanced stage in the stand dynamics of ~Baccharis pilularis Shrubland Alliance (A0836)$$ than the former association. Stands of this shrubland form an open to intermittent herb layer and an open to intermittent shrub layer. It is dominated by Baccharis pilularis and Rubus ursinus. Toxicodendron diversilobum and Clinopodium douglasii (= Satureja douglasii) are usually present, and a variety of other species that may also be present include Lonicera hispidula, Frangula californica (= Rhamnus californica), Symphyotrichum chilense (= Aster chilensis), Oemleria cerasiformis, Heracleum maximum (= Heracleum lanatum), Marah fabaceus, Holcus lanatus, Agrostis sp., Briza minor, Plantago lanceolata, Pteridium aquilinum, Geranium dissectum, Scrophularia californica, and Hypochaeris radicata. |

This alliance includes woodlands occurring along the upper Gulf Coast of Texas on the Ingleside barrier-strandplain, a Pleistocene barrier ridge. The canopy is dominated by a ~Quercus virginiana$. The patchy understory contains ~Ilex vomitoria$ and ~Prunus caroliniana$, which may also reach into the canopy. ~Schizachyrium scoparium$ grasslands are often intermixed with these woodlands. |

This community is found in the mountains of northwestern Montana and in the northwestern Great Plains on moderately deep to deep fine loam soils which often have a high percentage of rock fragments. It is dominated by short shrubs and mid grasses. Amelanchier alnifolia is the most common shrub. Others include Artemisia tridentata, Purshia tridentata, Spiraea betulifolia, Symphoricarpos spp., Rhus trilobata, Cercocarpus montanus, and Prunus virginiana. In the higher elevation stands, occasionally Pseudotsuga menziesii, Pinus ponderosa, Picea engelmannii, and Betula papyrifera are present within a young tree canopy, but these have insignificant cover. Typical grasses (mostly bunch grasses) are Festuca idahoensis, Pseudoroegneria spicata, Leucopoa kingii (= Festuca kingii), Achnatherum nelsonii ssp. dorei (= Stipa columbiana), Carex rossii, and Carex geyeri. Forbs include Achillea millefolium, Penstemon confertus, and Eriogonum flavum. |

Communities within the Salix eastwoodiae Seasonally Flooded Shrubland Alliance (A.1005) are scattered throughout the high-elevation, late snowmelt areas. They are found within glacial valley bottoms (e.g., seeps, toeslopes, benches, and stream benches), wet mountain meadows, and streambanks with gentle slopes (3%). Elevations range from 2300-3200 m. Sites that support these communities contain surface waters that collect in rivulets or are fed by seeps with water flowing at or near the surface. Soils are characterized by organic surface horizons. Textures of the underlying mineral horizons range from silty clay loam to loam sand. Vegetation types within this alliance are characterized as cold-deciduous seasonally flooded shrublands. They are dominated by Salix eastwoodiae. Salix planifolia, Salix boothii, and Betula nana (= Betula glandulosa) also occur in the shrub layer. Total shrub cover varies from 30 to over 75%. Carex scopulorum, Carex aquatilis, and Carex utriculata are usually dominant in the understory with at least 40% cover. Carex cusickii (= Carex obovoidea) and Carex luzulina are frequent and abundant. Calamagrostis canadensis is a dominant graminoid in their Idaho stands. Forb cover is low with Mertensia ciliata, Saxifraga odontoloma, and Thalictrum occidentale. Adjacent upland communities are dominated by Pinus monticola, Pinus contorta, and Abies concolor. |

This minor plant association is reported from Arizona, New Mexico and Wyoming. Sites are flat to gently sloping and include plains, plateaus and montane meadows. Substrates are variable and range from coarse-textured soils derived from sand, gravel or cinder to silty clay loam prairie soils. The vegetation is characterized by a moderate to dense (25-80% cover) herbaceous layer that is strongly dominated by the warm-season, perennial shortgrass Bouteloua gracilis. Associated grasses are Bouteloua curtipendula, Elymus elymoides, Muhlenbergia spp., Pascopyrum smithii, Pleuraphis jamesii (= Hilaria jamesii), Sporobolus cryptandrus, and the introduced annual grass Bromus tectorum. Forb cover is sparse. Scattered Ericameria nauseosa shrubs and an occasional Pinus edulis, Juniperus spp., or Pinus ponderosa (in montane stands) tree may be present. |
