Forests of this alliance are typically not oak-dominated, but Quercus rubra, Quercus alba, Quercus shumardii, and Quercus muehlenbergii may be present at low frequency or in areas transitional to stands of greater oak dominance. The subcanopy stratum may include Acer barbatum, Acer saccharum, Aesculus glabra var. glabra, Asimina triloba, Carpinus caroliniana, Cercis canadensis, Morus rubra, and Ostrya virginiana. Shrubs and woody vines may include, in addition to smaller examples of subcanopy species, Arundinaria gigantea, Berchemia scandens, Bignonia capreolata, Cocculus carolinus, Cornus drummondii, Crataegus calpodendron, Crataegus spp., Euonymus americana, Euonymus atropurpurea, Frangula caroliniana, Hydrangea arborescens, Ilex decidua, Lindera benzoin, Menispermum canadense, Parthenocissus quinquefolia, Ptelea trifoliata, Sideroxylon lycioides, Smilax bona-nox, Symphoricarpos orbiculatus, Toxicodendron radicans, Viburnum rufidulum, and Vitis aestivalis. Herbaceous species include Hybanthus concolor (which may dominate the stratum), Actaea pachypoda, Brachyelytrum erectum, Cardamine concatenata, Carex spp. (including possibly Carex albicans var. albicans (= Carex artitecta), Carex blanda, Carex cephalophora, Carex cherokeensis, Carex muehlenbergii), Caulophyllum thalictroides, Chasmanthium latifolium, Cynoglossum virginianum, Dioscorea quaternata, Galium sp., Laportea canadensis, Phryma leptostachya, Podophyllum peltatum, Sanguinaria canadensis, Polygonatum biflorum, Sanicula sp., Trillium recurvatum, Trillium viridescens, and Uvularia grandiflora.

Pseudotsuga menziesii - Quercus garryana / Melica subulata Forest
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.37365.CEGL003355
0 This small-patch community occurs on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands of the Strait of Georgia and also may be found in the Puget Sound area and San Juan Islands of Washington. In British Columbia, it occupies sites on gentle to steep slopes where bedrock outcroppings are common. Soils are usually very dry and may be nutrient poor to medium depending on depth of humus layer and underlying bedrock. Soils are derived from thin colluvial or morainal veneers overlying bedrock. This lowland mixed woodland is characterized by a moderately open canopy of <i>Pseudotsuga menziesii</i> with an understory of <i>Quercus garryana</i> occurring in canopy gaps. The shrub layer is sparse, and the herb layer is dominated by abundant <i>Melica subulata</i> with <i>Sanicula crassicaulis</i> and <i>Carex inops</i>. The moss layer is characterized by abundant <i>Rhytidiadelphus triquetrus</i> with some <i>Eurhynchium oreganum</i>. The absence of other conifer species, the sparse shrub layer, and the abundance of <i>Melica subulata, Sanicula crassicaulis</i>, and <i>Rhytidiadelphus triquetrus</i> differentiate this association from other related associations.

EcoArt 2002  0 Vegetation in this alliance occurs primarily on riverfronts and lake shores, mostly in the Atlantic Coastal Plain, Interior Low Plateau, and Ozarkian highlands. ~Salix caroliniana$ is the dominant small tree, and can form a dense to open or very open canopy. This vegetation tends to occupy small areas; these are usually relatively linear or crescent-shaped patches associated with streamfronts, sand bars, etc., but it sometimes occupies larger areas. Communities of this alliance result from flooding disturbance and are generally short-lived.
