It is one of several marsh or wet prairie communities of southern Florida, where it is a component of the Everglades system. This type occurs on peat and marl-peat soil flats, with a hydroperiod of 6-11-months. <i>Panicum hemitomon</i> is the dominant species. This type is floristically uniform and may contain a few other species in small amounts which are also found in the surrounding marshes.

Laminaria agardhii, Alaria spp., and Chondrus crispus are dominant and conspicuous. Other common associates can include Porphyra laciniata, Ceramium rubrum, and Hildenbrandtia prototypus. Additional species of red, green, and brown algae can occur in areas with greater light penetration.
