This alliance includes near-vertical to overhanging cliffs, dry to moist, with crevices, generally with very little vascular vegetation, and little nonvascular vegetation, with Asplenium montanum as a characteristic component. This community occurs on a number of different rock types, including sandstone, quartzite, gneiss, schist, phyllite, but all are acidic (pH of soils in crevices is usually less than 4.0). Asplenium montanum is a characteristic species in stands of this type, although it may not have high cover and will not necessarily even be present. Heuchera parviflora and Silene rotundifolia are equally characteristic and diagnostic. |

This association is found along the La Plata River in the San Juan River basin of northwestern New Mexico and probably elsewhere in northern New Mexico. Preliminary data suggest that sites are frequently flooded, low riverbars and in-channel riverwash along low-gradient rivers of lowland river valleys, at elevations around 1700 m (5580 feet). This is an early- to mid-successional association that occupies recently scoured bars and banks. <i>Populus deltoides</i> is present as seedlings and saplings, and <i>Tamarix ramosissima</i> may be common. <i>Salix exigua</i> is usually present but low in cover. Although ground cover is sparse, native wetland indicators are usually present and include <i>Agrostis exarata</i> and <i>Eleocharis palustris</i>. As a keystone species, the reproduction of <i>Populus deltoides</i> after flooding (and sufficient subsequent base flows) is critical to the sustainability of this community. |

This association is known only from the Gila River and San Francisco River watersheds, although it likely occurs to a limited extent elsewhere in southwestern New Mexico and southeastern Arizona. This early- to mid-successional forest association is found within the floodplain of large lowland valleys at elevations ranging from 1220 to 1640 m (4000-5370 feet). Stands occur on low bars or riverwash within the active channel. Sites are seasonally flooded, scouring away much of the undergrowth. Soils are either sandy, moist, weakly developed Entisols (Sandy Aquic Ustipsamments) or riverwash composed of non-cohesive and unconsolidated deposits of sands, gravels, or cobbles. This type is characterized by open to dense, young regeneration stands of <i>Populus fremontii</i> with young <i>Salix gooddingii</i> in the understory. <i>Baccharis salicifolia</i> remains common but not abundant. Forbs and grasses are scattered and variously represented by a suite of wetland indicators that may include <i>Cyperus esculentus, Echinochloa crus-galli, Juncus balticus, Polypogon monspeliensis, Polypogon viridis, Schoenoplectus pungens, Schoenoplectus tabernaemontani, Equisetum arvense, Polygonum lapathifolium, Rorippa sphaerocarpa</i>, and <i>Veronica americana</i>. As a keystone species, the reproduction of <i>Populus fremontii</i> after flooding (and sufficient subsequent base flows) is critical to the sustainability of this community. |

This riparian shrubland association is found across the Columbia Basin of Washington and adjacent Oregon. It usually occurs on the upper stream terraces of permanent streams, although it can occur in the active floodplain of intermittent streams. This is a 2- to 6-m (6- to 20-foot) tall shrubland community dominated by Philadelphus lewisii. A short, sparse shrub layer of Symphoricarpos albus appears with an herbaceous understory of primarily grasses, including Elymus glaucus, Poa pratensis, and Bromus tectorum. Other woody species that may appear abundantly are Toxicodendron rydbergii, Rosa nutkana, and Clematis ligusticifolia. This is the most productive of the currently recognized Philadelphus lewisii types. |
