This montane forest association occurs on a wide variety of aspects, slopes and landforms and is found in southern Utah on the Markagunt, Sevier and Paunsaugunt plateaus, in the Escalante and Tushar mountains and in the southern Rocky Mountains in northern New Mexico. Sites range between 2400 and 2850 m (7900-9360 feet) in elevation. Soils are often gravelly, rapidly drained loams (sandy to silty clay loams) and silts. Litter accumulations tend to be high but may be non-uniform and patchy. The vegetation is characterized by an open to closed tree canopy (10-70% cover) that is dominated or codominated by Abies concolor with a sparse to moderately dense understory dominated by clumps of the short shrub Juniperus communis. Pseudotsuga menziesii is frequently a codominant with other trees such as Picea pungens, Pinus flexilis, Pinus strobiformis (southern latitudes), Populus tremuloides, and Juniperus scopulorum. Abies lasiocarpa and Pinus ponderosa are accidental in the tree canopy and have relatively low cover. Other shrubs include scattered Symphoricarpos oreophilus, Shepherdia canadensis, Rosa woodsii, Ribes cereum, Paxistima myrsinites, Mahonia repens (= Berberis repens), or Ceanothus martinii. Acer glabrum is typically absent. The herbaceous layer is generally depauperate but can range as high as 10% cover in some stands. Carex rossii, Carex inops ssp. heliophila, Bromus anomalus, and Poa fendleriana are the most consistent species. |

This type is found in the Rocky Mountain Front Range and Black Hills of the United States. In the Black Hills, stands are found on flat to gently sloping or rolling topography of variable aspect, at higher elevations in the Central Core, Limestone Plateau, Minnekahta Foothills and Bear Lodge Mountains. Aspen stands are best developed and extend to lower elevations in the northern part of the range, including the Bear Lodge Mountains. Populus tremuloides is the dominant tree. Picea glauca or Pinus ponderosa may occur in this community as emergent trees. Shrub coverage is typically sparse, and herbaceous cover is high, often greater than 50%. Only Pteridium aquilinum has been found to be consistent and abundant in the understory in stands of this type, with coverage often greater than 50%. The shrub and herbaceous strata are otherwise variable. Among the more commonly found species are Corylus cornuta, Amelanchier alnifolia, Melica subulata, Anaphalis margaritacea, and Pyrola elliptica. |

This is technically not an alliance. It is a placeholder for a group of sparsely vegetated associations that do not have adequate vegetation descriptions, but do share certain substrate characteristics. |

This alliance contains seasonally flooded woodlands that are dominated by Nyssa biflora. Other tree species that may be present include Persea palustris, Magnolia virginiana, and others. Because surface water persists through the growing season in most years, the shrub layer is not well-developed. The herbaceous layer contains Panicum hemitomon, Woodwardia virginica, Bacopa caroliniana, Gratiola spp., Rhynchospora spp., and Triadenum walteri. Sphagnum cuspidatum is often abundant. These woodlands occur in seasonally flooded portions of natural flatwoods ponds of the southeastern Coastal Plain. |

This association encompasses Tsuga caroliniana forests on valley bottoms, gorge slopes, or other protected landforms. Tsuga canadensis or Pinus strobus may share the canopy with Tsuga caroliniana. The shrub stratum is typically dense and dominated by Rhododendron maximum. Galax urceolata is a common understory component. |
