Leymus condensatus Herbaceous Vegetation
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.37470.CEGL002883
 24 This association is only known from the Santa Monica Mountains region. However, it is likely to occur sporadically throughout central and southern coastal California. This herbaceous association occurs on somewhat steep to steep, often northerly slopes at low elevations between 25 and 503 m. It is dominated by Leymus condensatus in the herbaceous layer, though sometimes non-native species can codominate with this native grass. Salvia leucophylla is usually found in the shrub layer at low cover, and Juglans californica, Quercus agrifolia, and Sambucus mexicana infrequently occur in the tree or tall-shrub layer at low cover.

Pinus palustris / Aristida stricta - Sorghastrum nutans - Anthaenantia villosa Woodland
» more details
accession code: urn:lsid:vegbank.org:commConcept:32443-{5184C541-B049-4DA6-A562-E1698F1FF732}
NatureServe Biotics 2019 24 This is a mesic longleaf pine community, without scrub oaks (or with very few individuals of Quercus marilandica), occurring in small areas in sandhill landscapes in the Fall-line Sandhills of North Carolina and South Carolina. Pinus palustris dominates the open to fairly dense canopy (rather often exceeding 60% canopy closure). Typical species are Schizachyrium scoparium, Andropogon gyrans var. gyrans, Anthaenantia villosa, Sorghastrum nutans, Ionactis linariifolius, Gymnopogon brevifolius, Panicum virgatum, Lespedeza capitata, Lespedeza hirta, and Desmodium tenuifolium. Topographically, this community tends to occur in a sandhill landscape, in low moist areas or in small swales on ridgetops or in broad incipient drainages. The boundary between this community and several associated communities which do have scrub oaks is often very sharp. When fire-suppressed, Quercus falcata, Liquidambar styraciflua, and Quercus marilandica may invade.

» more details
accession code: urn:lsid:vegbank.org:commConcept:29974-{293A3E0A-F275-474A-9C78-539610FBF3D2}
NatureServe Biotics 2019 24 This community is found in the mountains of northwestern Montana and in the northwestern Great Plains on moderately deep to deep fine loam soils which often have a high percentage of rock fragments. It is dominated by short shrubs and mid grasses. Amelanchier alnifolia is the most common shrub. Others include Artemisia tridentata, Purshia tridentata, Spiraea betulifolia, Symphoricarpos spp., Rhus trilobata, Cercocarpus montanus, and Prunus virginiana. In the higher elevation stands, occasionally Pseudotsuga menziesii, Pinus ponderosa, Picea engelmannii, and Betula papyrifera are present within a young tree canopy, but these have insignificant cover. Typical grasses (mostly bunchgrasses) are Festuca idahoensis, Pseudoroegneria spicata, Leucopoa kingii, Achnatherum nelsonii ssp. dorei, Carex rossii, and Carex geyeri. Forbs include Achillea millefolium, Penstemon confertus, and Eriogonum flavum.
