Amaranthus cannabinus Tidal Herbaceous Vegetation
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.31392.CEGL006080
Eastern Ecology Working Group of...  0 This brackish marsh vegetation occupies a mid-tidal position on sandy intertidal rivershores along the north and mid-Atlantic coast where floodwaters are oligohaline to mesohaline. <i>Amaranthus cannabinus</i> is dominant and can be mixed with <i>Bidens</i> spp., <i>Polygonum punctatum, Sagittaria latifolia, Zizania aquatica</i>, and <i>Schoenoplectus pungens</i>. This association occurs on wave- and ice-scoured riverbanks or other brackish marsh habitat with coarse substrate and where tidal flooding freely drains. Species composition and abundance can change dramatically from year to year.

Achnatherum speciosum Herbaceous Alliance
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.27661.ACHNATHERUMSPEC
Western Ecology Working Group of...  0 This grassland of the Mojave Desert grows in very xeric conditions with hot summers and occasional freezes in the winter. This alliance requires well-drained rocky or sandy soils. It was formerly widespread, but overgrazing has decimated stands. Remaining stands occur from 600-1000 m elevation on flat ridges, lower slopes, valleys, and washes. Stands of this alliance are dominated by Achnatherum speciosum (= Stipa speciosa), which is the sole, dominant or important plant in the herbaceous layer. Species composition varies between stands, but Achnatherum speciosum is the unifying species. Other graminoids which may be present include Nassella lepida, Achnatherum hymenoides (= Oryzopsis hymenoides), Nassella cernua, Poa secunda, and Elymus elymoides. Scattered emergent shrubs, such as Hymenoclea salsola, may be present.

Larrea tridentata - Encelia farinosa Shrubland Alliance
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.17891.LARREATRIDENTAT
Western Ecology Working Group of...  0 This widespread alliance occurs in the Mojave, Sonoran and Colorado deserts and extends into the southeastern Great Basin. Stands occur on alluvial fans, bajadas, upland slopes and minor washes. Sites are gentle to moderately sloping. Substrates are typically well-drained, rocky soils derived from colluvium or alluvium, and/or with a pavement surface. The vegetation is characterized by an open, xeromorphic shrub layer codominated by Larrea tridentata and Encelia farinosa. Cover of either species does not exceed the other by more than twice, and no other species greatly exceeds the cover of both combined. Other desert shrubs and dwarf-shrubs may be present to codominant including Agave deserti, Ambrosia dumosa, Bebbia juncea, Fagonia laevis, Ferocactus cylindraceus, Krameria grayi, Opuntia basilaris, Opuntia bigelovii, Peucephyllum schottii, and occasional emergent Fouquieria splendens. The herbaceous layer is typically sparse with scattered Dasyochloa pulchella (= Erioneuron pulchellum), Pleurocoronis pluriseta, or Stephanomeria pauciflora. Abundant annuals such as Eriogonum inflatum may be seasonally abundant.
