This alliance consists of vegetation of freshwater lakes dominated and characterized by ~Eleocharis cellulosa$. Overall cover of vascular plants is sometimes sparse. ~Eleocharis cellulosa$ may be nearly monospecific, or may be codominated by ~Rhynchospora tracyi$ or ~Eleocharis elongata$, and intermixed with other species, including ~Rhynchospora inundata, Hymenocallis latifolia, Crinum americanum, Bacopa caroliniana$, and ~Utricularia gibba (= Utricularia biflora)$. Algal periphyton consisting of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) and green algae is often dense and well-developed, especially in sparser associations in the alliance. The algal periphyton breaks down the oolitic substrate and deposits biogenic marl. |

This box-elder riparian forest is found on floodplains at warm elevations in the western Great Plains of the United States. This is an early successional community dominated by Acer negundo. Populus deltoides may also be present. Tree density may be moderate to high. Shrubs are common and vary from short (<1 m) to tall (>2 m). Prunus virginiana and Cornus sericea (= Cornus stolonifera) are often abundant. At Wind Cave National Park, these woodlands vary in composition, with Acer negundo usually present, but Prunus virginiana frequently absent. Tree cover typically is in the 10-25% range. Other tree species include Ulmus americana, Quercus macrocarpa, Fraxinus pennsylvanica and Populus deltoides. Total shrub cover (tall and short shrubs) is often greater than 50%. Common species, in addition to Prunus virginiana, include Rhus trilobata, Symphoricarpos occidentalis, Ribes aureum, and Rubus pubescens. Herbaceous cover is variable, but usually less than 50%. Species composition also varies; common species include Poa pratensis, Monarda fistulosa and Apocynum cannabinum. In Colorado, dense thickets of Prunus virginiana may occur. When left undisturbed, the shrub canopy can be very thick and nearly impenetrable. |
