Quercus alba - Quercus coccinea - Quercus falcata / Kalmia latifolia - Vaccinium pallidum Forest
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.35336.CEGL007691
Southeastern Ecology Working Gro...  0 This mixed oak association includes dry, deciduous forests of low elevations (below 915 m [3000 feet]) in the Southern Blue Ridge, associated with sandy, dry soils derived from granitic gneiss and other related acidic substrates. This association is known as a matrix forest type in the area of Brevard, North Carolina, where it occurs on open slopes and broad ridges, in a landscape of a low, rolling plateau. It may extend south into South Carolina. These forests have canopies dominated by <i>Quercus alba, Quercus coccinea, </i><i>Quercus falcata, Quercus velutina</i>, and sometimes <i>Quercus prinus</i>, although other species can be present, including <i>Pinus echinata, Pinus virginiana</i>, and <i>Pinus rigida</i>. This forest is characterized by having associated species more typical of lower, non-montane areas, such as <i>Quercus falcata, Schizachyrium scoparium, Silphium compositum, Baptisia tinctoria</i>, and <i>Piptochaetium avenaceum</i>, and by the absence of species more typical in mesic, montane oak forests, including <i>Medeola virginiana, Maianthemum racemosum, Thelypteris noveboracensis, Athyrium filix-femina ssp. asplenioides, Dennstaedtia punctilobula<i>, and <i>Dryopteris intermedia)</i>. The shrub stratum can be quite open, with <i>Rhododendron calendulaceum</i> typical. <i>Kalmia latifolia</i> and <i>Vaccinium pallidum</i> are usually present in moderate abundance. <i>Solidago odora var. odora</i> and <i>Pteridium aquilinum var. latiusculum</i> are typical herb components.</i></i>

Broussonetia papyrifera Ruderal Forest
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.34916.CEGL004106
Southeastern Ecology Working Gro...  0 These forests occur on the upper slopes of loess bluffs of the Mississippi River and are probably more widespread in the warmer areas of the southeastern U.S. The forests are dominated by the non-native tree <i>Broussonetia papyrifera</i> in all strata. Native canopy or subcanopy trees occur at low cover values.

Thuja plicata / Linnaea borealis Forest
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.21944.THUJAPLICATALIN
Western Ecology Working Group of...  0 This evergreen forest association is found on the west slope of the Oregon Cascades, on the east slope of the Cascades near Mount Hood, and possibly extending into Washington. Stands generally occur along stream margins between 1100-1400 m elevation on all aspects. Upland stands are usually indicative of a perched water table. Soils are fine, sandy clay loams with weak subangular, blocky structure. The tree canopy is dominated by Thuja plicata, averaging between 30-50% cover. Abies grandis and Picea engelmannii are common tree associates. Occasionally Populus balsamifera ssp. trichocarpa (= Populus trichocarpa) and/or Populus tremuloides may be conspicuous associates. Linnaea borealis is always present though cover values rarely exceed 5%. Other shrubs may include Acer circinatum, Ribes lacustre, Mahonia nervosa, and Athyrium filix-femina. The most common forb is Maianthemum stellatum. A rich and varied assortment of other shrubs and forbs is usually present.
