This saline alkali sacaton community type is found in the northwestern Great Plains of the United States. Stands occur in moderately saline sites. This community has low species diversity and is dominated by moderately salt-tolerant graminoids. Total vegetation cover is sparse to moderate, and bare ground is common. The dominant species is Sporobolus airoides. Graminoids of high constancy in Montana include Poa cusickii and Poa secunda (= Poa juncifolia). Less common graminoids include Distichlis spicata, Hordeum jubatum, and Pascopyrum smithii. Forbs of highest constancy in Montana include Symphyotrichum falcatum (= Aster falcatus), Plantago eriopoda, and Iva axillaris. |

This alliance is one expression of California coastal sage scrub. Stands grow on steep, south-facing slopes from 250-950 m elevation. Stands of this alliance are subject to long, dry summers and typically grow on sites with low moisture availability. Precipitation averages about 35 cm per year, and falls as rain predominantly between November and April. Some species are relatively inactive during the summer, while others are facultatively drought-deciduous. ~Artemisia californica$ and ~Eriogonum fasciculatum$ are the important shrubs in the canopy of this shrubland alliance. Other shrubs present may include ~Adenostoma fasciculatum, Yucca whipplei, Lotus scoparius, Diplacus aurantiacus ssp. aurantiacus, Rhus ovata, Malosma laurina$, and ~Salvia apiana$. The herbaceous layer is variable. |

This alliance is found in the Columbia Basin, northwestern Great Plains, northern Rocky Mountain states, and northeastern Utah along streams and rivers where flooding occurs but is of short duration. It has an open canopy dominated by Salix amygdaloides. Populus deltoides can also be present. Some stands have a well-developed shrub stratum in which Salix exigua is abundant. |

This plant association is found only on hill slopes adjacent to the Stikine River Delta, Alaska. Windblown silt is deposited on these sites at least annually, and the soils are deep and well- to moderately well-drained silts. Elevation is less than 150 m (500 feet). The overstory, typically about 60% cover, consists of Picea sitchensis and Tsuga heterophylla and regeneration is common. Average shrub cover is 60% and Oplopanax horridus dominates the tall-shrub layer, sometimes codominating with Rubus spectabilis. Low shrubs are absent. The forb layer averages 25% cover and Circaea alpina dominates. Fern cover averages 60% including Athyrium filix-femina and Gymnocarpium dryopteris. Grasses and sedges are lacking. |
