From junction of Birch Spring Shelter path and AT, walk N along the AT; where AT levels out (approx. 3760' in ele.), turn E at large (approx. 40" DBH) red oak that is within 6' of AT; walk downslope 110 degrees to bear cage (at S end of plot).
This elevation is the first area seen with canopy sized Liriodendron and Prunus serotina. Stand is mesic. -- Stand appears to be older, less disturbed than areas higher on the ridgetops. This same signature should be on the other side of the AT surrounding Birch Spring Shelter.
