Landscape Narrative
site is slightly concave with several rock outcrops projecting from slope about 3-4 meters. -- This forest is protected by surrounding cliff face up above and on either side. Directly below Alum Cave proper, there is a young stand of yellow birch which is probably related to the mining done at the cave.

Observation Narrative
An unusual mix of species. Quite a lot of Leucothoe. Soil is thin and rocky. Ilex montana is large multistemmed. 2 large canopy red maple. Wonder about the history of this site...trees are large, especially given the site conditions.
