Plot is located at the headwaters of Big Tommy Branch on a ridge between the branch and one of the first tributaries. The ridge begins at Doe Knob and runs southeast towards the branch the plot is on this ridge.
Canopy trees (all Q. rubra) sig. larger than subcanopy (Betula alleg. and Halsia am.) presence of dead Robinia trunks in plot. Extremely herb rich and woody speices rich area. Sign of heart roat in canopy of red maple. -- The sample area is a quality representation of most of the forest types inhabiting the NE facing slopes of NC side of Doe Knob. The plot is situated between headwaters of big tommy and dry branch which confluences at 3600.
