Observation Narrative
A 10 x 40 m plot configuration was used to sample this narrow band of nearly pure live oak forest on a middle slope dune bench between a swamp and the main sand road through False Cape State Park. The short, spreading, and contorted oaks cast a nearly continuous canopy cover, deeply shading the area and contributing to the paucity of herbaceous species. Deer grazing, very evident on Smilax and other shrubs, may also inhibit the establishment of herbs. Loblolly pine is the only other canopy tree, occurring mainly on the periphery of the live oak stand.
