Observation Narrative
Mesic, mixed deciduous forest on a narrow "ridge" that juts out from an undulating upland into the edge of a tupelo swamp. Large oaks (Quercus spp.) and hickories (Carya spp.) are in the canopy and Fagus grandifolia occurs as an understory tree. Ostrya virginiana is common and abundant as a small tree / shrub. Stewartia malacodendron is distinctive and abundant as a shrub. Woody seedlings dominate the herb strata. Characteristic herbs are present, with low cover.
