Observation Narrative
This plot is representative of the most mature and diverse section of a mesic mixed hardwood forest occupying the uplands bordering swamps along the North Landing River, south of Pocaty River. The sample was placed on a short, gentle slope above the swamp, where nine tree species are present in the canopy and sub-canopy. Fagus grandifolia is most important woody species and occurs in all strata. This stand is noteworthy for the occurrence of Stewartia malacodendron and Styrax grandifolius, both of which are fairly common in the plot.
