Observation Narrative
Upland red spruce forest on side slope. Ground cover dominated variously by needle duff, ericads, or moss. Bryophytes are non-sphagnous and occur on lateral roots and over leaf litter; Bazzania trilobata is a common liverwort. A number of fallen trees are present. Extensive spruce regeneration in the 0.5 to 5 m tall stratum, with much of the remaining spruce in the overstory. Scattered hemlocks seem healthy. Stand is no more than about 80 years old, and regenerated following extensive railroad logging and fires in the 1920's.
