Spruce forest surrounded by a Northern Hardwood forest. 50 m to the south is the Highland Scenic Highway (Rt. 150). Ca. 1 mile South is the Cranberry Glades.;Spruce forest on N facing aspect. T2 seems dominated by spruce while Red Maple and Yellow Birch make up a bulk of the T3. Heavy spruce regeneration is the S1, and S2 layers. The forest floor is sparsely vegetated with a few ferns and a couple of forbs. Lots of standing woody debris in plot. Dense moss cover on downed wood and bases of tree. The tree cored was ca. 140 yrs, but it was a poor core. No obvious signs of canopy release 100 yrs ago. This could be a stand of old growth.
Representativeness
Medium patch of a spruce forest. Plot was placed to sample an "old" mixed spruce polygon.
