Observation Narrative
Community Type: sea level fen
Community Description: Ecotone sandwiched between wet woods (lying slightly upland) and salt marsh. Slope is very slight. Fen is dominated by graminoids with occasional forbs and a few shrubs. Ice cover makes it difficult to determine. Nearest the woods, dominant species are mixed Cladium mariscoides, Scipus pungens and Eleocharis rostellata. These species grade into an area of Phragmites, with the above mixed in. Occasional dead cedars can be found well away from the wood edge. Phragmites is not very robust or dense. Understory beneath Phragmites goes (toward the creek) into Spartina patens and Distichlis spicata. Toxicodenron radicans is the most frequent shrub and is found close to the wood edge only. Fen is more or less 60' wide.
