Observation Narrative ? Community Type: sea level fen Community Description: Densely vegetated, very wet part of sea level fen located near the transition of fen to salt marsh. A few young trees and shrubs are found among the graminoid-dominated vegetation. Ground is very soft. Footprints leave rather deep impressions which fill with water, although no water is evident on the undisturbed surface. Small, more solid hummocks are occupied by low Toxicodendron radicans and Rosa palustris. Cladium mariscoides covers about 70% of the area, below which are shorter forbs and some shrubs. Plot is located at a bend in the adjacent Chamaecyparis-dominated hydric/mesic woods. Described vegetation continues north and west to Jesse's Creek. Near the creek, more halophytic species, Spartina alterniflora, Amaranthus cannabinus dominate, and to the east a broad expanse of Eleocharis rostellata grades into typical salt marsh graminoids. No disturbances. Soil is about 30 cm of peat over gray sand, then light gray sandy clay. Water table is 11 cm below the surface. Since the first observation of this site in December 2003, the larger colony of Phragmites australis has spread quite a bit. Local Topography: hummocky Fauna: box turtle present Note: This is plot data taken from the fen visited in "A2 - obs pt South of Jesse's Creek" (an observation point visited in December 2003).
