Observation Narrative
Community Type: sea level fen
Community Description: Diverse community, saturated with fresh water at the time, dominated by graminoids located between woods and salt marsh. Fen is basically flat but is dotted with small hummocks, most of which support Toxicodendron radicans, Myrica sp., or Baccharis halimifolia. Most diverse array of species is found near the wood edge, where a freshwater seep enters from adjoining woods. Cladium mariscoides and Eleocharis rostellata are the dominant species landward. Moving seaward, the Cladium begins to thin out and occassional Scirpus pungens and Distichlis spicata appear. Continuing E, the Distichlis spicata becomes dominant and finally grades into Spartina alterniflora.
