Observation Narrative
Community Type: sea level fen
Community Description: Fen located between a mixed hardwood/cedar forest to the NW and a brackish/salt marsh to the E. Topography is slightly hummocky near the tree line. Some small shrubs (Toxicodendron, Myrica) and small trees (Juniperus) are growing on them. Area is densely vegetated, mostly by graminoids and mixed forbs. Diversity is low. Land rises almost imperceptibly going toward Barnegat Bay (east) and as the elevation increases, so does the moisture content of the soil. Fen is dry at the surface and some of the vegetation is stunted and wilted. Going east, vegetation changes from mixed forbs/graminoids to a band of Panicum virgatum. P. virgatum becomes mixed with Phragmites, which grades into a swath of pure Phragmites. This ends at the edge of the Distichlis-dominated salt marsh. Soil is well-decomposed peat over sandy loam. Oxidized roots are found at 18 cm; from there, soil becomes yellow loamy sand with black inclusions, red mottles and veins and layers of organic matter, all with a pH of 5.0. Phragmites is encroaching on 3 sides of the plot. Fen is partially protected from salt water overwash by a built-up roadway to the north.
