Observation Narrative ? Community Type: sea level fen General Description: Discontinuous sea level fen extending for about 300 m along the upland edge of marshes on the E side of Job's Creek. A few small areas dominated by Cladium are embedded in Typha angustifolia and Scirpus pungens-dominated areas with only small amounts of Cladium. Phragmites australis is scattered within much of the fen, and forms a dense stand between the fen and the creek. Species diversity in the fen is high and includes Eryngium aquaticum and Sabatia dodecandra. Fen appears to be regularly inundated, with tidal freshwater at its N end, and perhaps brackish at the S (downstream) end. Dead trees of pine, juniper, and Chamaecyparis are scattered throughout the fen (cause of death is unknown although many dead cedars appear to have been burned). Soils are peat over sandy clays, saturated to the surface. There is no sign of recent human disturbance but spread of Phragmites is a major threat. Fauna: Chelydra serpentina
