Observation Narrative ? Community Type: sea level fen Community Description: Saturated sea level fen community, which may be tidally influenced. The fen is located between two "arms" (projecting E to W) of forest extending into the freshwater tidal marsh on the W side of Job's Creek. Upper edges of fen, on the N, W and S side are dominated by Cladium mariscoides, Scirpus pungens, and forbs. In the slightly depressed central area is a stand of Typha angustifolia. The two arms of land that project into the marsh are composed mostly of Juniperus virginiana and Myrica spp.; woods to the west are Acer rubrum, Nyssa sylvatica, Chamaecyparis thyoides and Juniperus. The entire area is under a few inches of water, perhaps from tidal flooding. A number of cut trees and a child's camping area are nearby. Soil is about 30 cm of peat, muck and sandy muck; at 30 cm soil changes abruptly in texture and color to gray clay with pebbles (0.2 - 3 cm diameter), then gray clay with bright orange mottles. Soil boring was taken at ~6' from the plot, at the intersection of the fen and forest. Entire site is compromised by spreading Phragmites australis.
