Observation Narrative ? Community Type: sea level fen Community Description: Southern (brackish) end of N-S linear sea level fen community located between a broad swath of Phragmites-dominated marsh to the N, and Juniperus virginiana-dominated woods to the S. Fen is located at the tip of a wedge-shaped peninsula that extends into the marsh bordering the creek. Small tidal channels are found throughout the marsh. Tidal flooding was seen here recently during an extended period (8 days) of rain. Soil is peat over sandy muck and sand with a considerable amount of clay in it. Dead trees are found throughout the fen, probably killed by salt water flooding. The site is undisturbed. Fen itself has low diversity and is dominated by graminoids Cladium mariscoides, Scirpus pungens, and Eleocharis rostellata. Phragmites is taking over this community. Soil has a layer of poorly decomposed peat over mucky sand. Lower layers are a mixture of clay and sand.
