Observation Narrative ? Community Type: sea level fen Community Description: Long, narrow ecotone between Chamaecyparis thyoides forest to the N and grading into a brackish, then salt marsh to the S. Dense vegetation in multiple strata cover the soil, which is peat in increasing stages of decomposition with depth, then clayey sand and sandy clay, with pH ranging from 5.0 to 4.8. Several rare species are found including Cirsium virginianum, Eryngium aquaticum, Sabatia dodecandra, Solidago stricta and Asclepias lanceolata. Zonation is well defined along transect from fen to marsh. Elevation minutely declines from forest to marsh, probably only about 1-1.5'. No disturbance is evident except for charred tree bases from fire during the winter of 2003-2004, and a few fire trenches. Soils show evidence of infrequent flooding, but it is not apparent at the surface. Fen follows tree line east, then bends N and then W. It becomes progressively less diverse as the exposure changes, and Panicum virgatum and Phragmites replace the graminoids (Cladium, Eleocharis) dominating the S-facing exposure.
