Observation Narrative ? Community Type: sea level fen Community Description: Diverse upper edge of sea level fen, located between a Chamaecyparis thyoides-Pinus rigia-dominated forest to the N and salt marsh, then tidal creek to the S. Fen wraps around a long finger of land extending E into the salt marsh. Fen has well marked zonation on the S-facing side. At the upper edge, adjacent to the woods is a diverse band of forbs and graminoids, including several rare species. This grades into a band dominated by Cladium mariscoides and Eleocharis rostellata, which in turn grades into a band of Typha angustifolia and Scirpus pungens, then salt marsh. No disturbance except for a fire in the sinter 2003-2004, which charred the fen and the tree edge, and resulting fire trenching into the woods. Fen is wettest near the marsh and dry at the upper edge at this time (full moon, high tide). Soil is sandy mucky peat to a depth of about 25 cm, then mucky sand with mottles. At about 45 cm soil becomes sandy clay. At about 62 cm, a hard layer [maybe ironstone] is reached (not rock) which the soil auger could not penetrate.
