Observation Narrative ? Community Type: sea level fen Community Description: Sea level fen community located on the N side of the elongate finger of Chamaecyparis-Pinus-Nyssa-Acer maritime forest that forms the upper edge of the fen. Area closest to the wood edge is dominated by Panicum virgatum with mixed forbs and occasional shrubby copses or single shrubs. More diversity is found beyond, N and NE of the area that is shaded from full sun. There, the P. virgatum grades into a band of Cladium mariscoides and Eleocharis rostellata, then into a stand of Scirpus pungens. Soil becomes gradually wetter with distance from the tree line. Beyond the Scirpus pungens is Spartina/Distichlis salt marsh. There is no evidence of disturbance. ATV tire tracks seen last year are grown over. Soil has a 12 cm layer of black 10YR 2/1 peat and roots over a mixture of muck and sand, then grades onto sandy clay with a few pebbles. The water table is at 35 cm below the surface.
