Observation Narrative |
Community Type: sea level fen
Community Description: Circular depression located within a mesic/hydric Acer rubrum-Liquidambar styraciflua-Nyssa sylvatica forest. Central area of the depression is saturated. Spartina patens is the dominant species, with small amounts of Scirpus pungens and Hibiscus moscheutos. On the higher ground, around the edges, grows a mixture of graminoids (Cladium mariscoides, Calamagrostis cinnoides, Panicum virgatum), forbs (Thelypteris palustris, Euthamia graminifolia, Eupatorium pilosum, Aster novi belgii), and low, shrubby Toxicodendron radicans. A narrow ditch bisects the community and runs approximately N through the woods to a Phragmites-dominated marsh. Forest lies between two major roads leading to Long Beach Island and probably grows on fill, but there doesn't appear to be any recent disturbance. Soil has a thick layer of peat, which gradually becomes more decomposed with depth, over mucky sand, which becomes saturated at a depth of ~18 cm.
Note: This is plot data taken from the fen visited in "N of Rt 72 - obs pt" (an observation point visited in May 2004).
