Observation Narrative
Community Type: sea level fen
General Description: Fen is sandwiched between two main roads in a disturbed woodland. To the E, near Barnegat Bay, ditches and impoundments are present. Woods to the W are evidently drained but basically free of invasive species.
Community Description: Elliptical depression surrounded on all sides by wet woods. Edges are at a slightly higher elevation than the center, which has some open water in it. An ~50' wide band at the edges support almost all the species noted. Band is dominated by Toxicodendron radicans and Cladium mariscoides, with considerable amounts of Scirpus pungens and Eleocharis rostellata. Center of the depression contains 95% Spartina patens, with Sphagnum in spots that are shallower. Forbs found in the outer band include Vaccinium macrocarpon, Thelypteris palustris, Osmunda cinnamomea, Juncus canadensis, Bidens sp., Lycopus sp., and Viola lanceolata. Much greater variety expected later in the season.
Note: This is observation point data taken from the fen visited in plot "N of Rt 72 - plot" (a releve plot visited in Sept 2005).
