Observation Narrative
Plot is located in the mostly open portion of a dry, calcareous woodland occupying steep, convex slopes above Wormly Pond. This is a rare community type developed very locally in ravine-rich topography where streams have downcut into the shell laden Yorktown formation. The prevalence of calciphitic species such as Quercus muhlenbergii, Acer barbatum, Ostrya virginiana, Cercis canadensis and Verbesina virginica characterizes this highly unusual coastal plain vegetation. The herbaceous stratum of this occurrence notably diverse in graminoids, several of which are dominants. Trees measured (dbh in cm.): Quercus muhlenbergii (45)
Directions: on steep convex slope above pond, 0.3 mi. WSW of the dam.
