Observation Narrative ? The habitat is a fairly large mesic "island" surrounded by non-riverine swamps at the western edge of the Great Dismal Swamp. Soil drainage is good enough to support a mixed forest of beech and mixed oaks (Quercus alba, Q. pagoda, Q. michauxii), with Ilex opaca and Ostrya virginiana common in the understory. This forest has not been disturbed in quite some time. There is little oak recruitment and extensive beech recruitment in this stand. Very heavy shading from dense understory beech and holly no doubt contributes to the sparse herb flora.
