Observation Narrative
The habitat is a small mesic "island" surrounded by non-riverine saturated forests at the western edge of the Great Dismal Swamp. Soil drainage is good enough to support a mixed forest of tulip-poplar, beech, and mixed oaks (Quercus nigra, Q. pagoda, Q. velutina), with Ilex opaca and Oxydendrum arboreum common in the understory. This forest is fairly young and the understory is dominated by beech recruitment indicative of a future successional trajectory towards total beech dominance. Very heavy shading from dense understory beech and holly no doubt contributes to the extremely sparse herb flora.
