Observation Narrative
Plot location: W-facing slope bordering Grove Creek ca. 0.5 miles N. of Sewage Treatment Plant.
Rock Types Present: shell fragments abundant in mineral soil.
This plot represents the most xerophytic, thinly-canopied extreme of "shell barrens" (see also plots GROC006 and GROC009). It is basically a woodland of stunted Quercus muhlenbergii, Acer barbatum, Juniperus virginiana, Cercis canadensis, and Cornus florida, with a patchy herb layer dominated by locally dense colonies of Erigeron pulchellus. Another characteristic herb, Verbesina virginica, occurs in few other Virginia habitats. Some signs of herbivory were observed in and around the plot.
