Observation Narrative
Like most of the gentle, high elevation stream heads on the Allegheny Mountain east slope, Newman Run supports extensive secondary forest more or less dominated by red spruce (Picea rubens). The soils here range from moderately well drained to somewhat poorly drained, with small inclusions of seeps and wetland herbaceous species among the otherwise terrestrial vegetation. The plot is located in an area of mixed hardwood and red spruce which regenerated after clearcutting and probably fire in the 1920s. Successional trends in these stands appear to be toward a more complete future dominance of spruce). Measured trees in plot (dbh in cm.): Picea rubens (35,32,30), Acer rubrum (26,25,21), Prunus serotina (52,38), Quercus rubra (31).
