Observation Narrative
This plot is situated on a slightly elevated terrace along a headwaters branch of Bearwallow Run. The forest vegetation here, a pure stand of red spruce (Picea rubens), is decidedly reminiscent of New England. The spruce, with good reproduction evident, dominates in all woody layers and probably regenerated following clearcutting in the 1920s. The herbaceous layer is dominated by carpets of northern clubmosses Lycopodium obscurum var dendroideum and L. clavatum. Soils vary from moderately well drained to somewhat poorly drained, with some gleying visible in the upper horizon. Open, bog like seeps are located adjacent to this stand along the small stream and an old logging railroad grade.
Similar red spruce stands are conspicuous features along most of the major, high elevation stream heads of the Allegheny Mountain east slope.
Trees measured in plot (dbh in cm): Picea rubens (47).
