Observation Narrative
This forest is dominated by red spruce. Some of the larger trees have died, creating canopy gaps and promoting growth of herb and shrub layer spruce. Because boulder fields and bouldery soils are prevalent here, one has to suspect that cold air may play a role in maintaining the plant species here. Plot located ca. 0.25 mi WNW of lookout tower.
Trees measured in plot: Picea rubens @ 39.5 cm, Tsuga canadensis @ 41.5 cm, Acer rubrum @ 19 cm.
