This site is a dramatically convex "nose" on a steep slope bordering the head-ravines of Matoaka Lake. Plot size had to be limited to 200 sq. m. to achieve homogeneity on the very short and undulating slope. Soils at this site are extraordinarily calcareous for the Coastal Plain, which probably accounts for the similarly exceptional species-richness in this 200 sq. m. sample. The overall vegetation is a very open oak woodland with a patchy but diverse herb layer. Noteworthy species here include Quercus muhlenbergii, Viburnum rufidulum, Desmodium glutinosum, Erigeron pulchellus, Hexalectris spicata, and Scleria oligantha. Grades quickly to acidic oak/ericad forest at top of slope.
