Observation Narrative
Plot location: slope above head of Matoaka Lake W of William and Mary Hall.
Rock Types Present: shell fragments present.
This plot represents the same vegetation as CWW004 and is located just to the SW on the same ravine slope. Here, the slope is less convex and a rectangular 16 x 20m configuration could be accommodated between the swamp and the acidic oak/ericad vegetation at the top of the slope. Numerous shell fragments are present and soil samples are highly calcareous. The vegetation here is a more closed forest than in plot CWW004, with overstory dominance by Quercus muhlenbergii and Q. alba. Asimina triloba is the dominant shrub, suggesting somewhat more mesic conditions. Herbaceous richness is extraordinary for a dry Coastal Plain forest. Herbivory appears to be a significant problem here.
