Observation Narrative
A very small (ca. 150 sq. meter), but nearly pristine example of an open canopy seepage on an otherwise forested mountain slope. Plot located ca. 100 m upslope of FR 201 at a point just east of Pearis Thompson Branch. Prominent calciphilic plants (Carex flava, Carex tetanica, Carex buxbaumii, Cypripedium reginae, Scirpus pendulus, Thuja occidentalis, etc.) here and in other nearby spots reflect the influence of underlying limestone and contrast sharply with the predominant acidic soil vegetation of the hollow. Within the plot, the herbaceous stratum is extremely dense and multi-layered except for a small seepage which has a gravelly substrate supporting dense mats of Drosera rotundifolia. Woody invasion of the seep is a potential threat, but appears to be quite slow because of very wet, unstable soils.
