Observation Narrative
A diverse, dry mesic hardwood forest situated at the top of a nearly sheer, eroded bluff along the James River. Abundant Pliocene shell deposits of the Yorktown Formation are visible in the exposed soil if the bluff; weathered shell fragments presumably enhance fertility of the loamy sand capping the bluff in the vicinity of the plot. Plants occurring here have localized distributions in the coastal plain, mostly of exclusively in calcareous habitats, includes: Carya cordiformis, Quercus muhlenbergii, Ulmus rubra, Ostrya virginiana, Cercis canadensis var canadensis, Ageratina altissima var altissima and Arabis laevigata var laevigata.
Plot location: At top of steep, undercut, shell-laiden bluff fronting the James River north of Camp Lyons and ca. 0.6 miles ENE of Eastover Plantation.
