Observation Narrative
A xeric, open woodland with a mosaic of srubby vine tangles and open sand. Occupying an ancient dune located well back (0.4 mi) from the ocean, this is the only community on Wallops Island where Quercus falcata was found. It appears to be related to the Prunus serotina - Sassafras albidum - Amelanchier canadensis - Quercus velutina / Smilax rotundifolia Forest, which is recognized as a globally rare (G2G3) type.
Plot located ca. 100 m southeast of old lookout tower on south side of jeep road paralleling Cow Gut Flat at north end of Wallops Island.
