Description: This alliance, found in the midwestern United States, occurs at the bases of steep cliffs. Disjunct populations of northern species are common. The most abundant species include ~Adoxa moschatellina, Cornus canadensis, Circaea alpina, Cystopteris bulbifera, Impatiens pallida, Maianthemum canadense, Mertensia paniculata$, and ~Mitella nuda$. Exposed talus and boulders are common. ^This alliance occurs at the bases of steep, north-facing, dolomite talus slopes. Cold air drains from the fissures and ice caves and maintains cool, moist conditions. Stands of this alliance are often small.
