Name: A.1631
Reference: EcoArt 2002
Description: This alliance occurs in the alpine tundra in the mountains of Colorado. Stands are found in the upper alpine zone between 3350-3650 m elevation. Stands are located in areas that support ~Trifolium dasyphyllum$- or ~Silene acaulis$-dominated communities, but that have been extensively disturbed by pocket gopher activity. The soils are poorly developed, but have a high organic matter content. The soil profile often has two A horizons, with the remnants of older soil horizons buried beneath recently deposited material from pocket gopher digging. The number of herbaceous species is low. ~Polemonium viscosum$ dominates the herbaceous canopy. ~Campanula rotundifolia, Geum rossii, Mertensia oblongifolia (= Mertensia viridis), Polygonum bistortoides$, and ~Smelowskia calycina$ are common associates. Moss and lichen species are usually absent.
