Description: Vegetation included in this alliance occurs on scree and gravel slides in canyons, and on hill and mountain slopes in the Colorado Rockies. Elevations range from 1800-3050 m. Sites are on moderately steep to steep slopes with a loose rocky surface. Soils are poorly developed, dry and rocky. Parent materials include volcanic rock, and possibly shale if these communities also occur where individuals of ~Aletes anisatus$ were collected in the Piceance Basin in western Colorado. Stands of this alliance have an herbaceous layer dominated or codominated by the cespitose perennial forb ~Aletes anisatus$ and the rhizomatous forb ~Scutellaria brittonii$. Other principal forb species include ~Maianthemum stellatum, Physaria acutifolia, Clematis occidentalis, Paronychia jamesii, Oenothera caespitosa, Penstemon glaber var. brandegeei$, and ~Eriogonum flavum$. The shrub ~Rubus idaeus$ and the grass ~Bromus inermis ssp. pumpellianus$ may also be present.
