Name: Pinus (rigida, echinata) - Quercus coccinea / Ilex opaca Forest
Reference: Eastern Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This closed mixed forest is characterized by Pinus rigida, Quercus coccinea, Quercus alba, Quercus stellata, and Acer rubrum. A subcanopy of Ilex opaca and Cornus florida is particularly characteristic of this type. The shrub layer is made up of Gaylussacia baccata, Vaccinium pallidum, Clethra alnifolia, Ilex glabra, and at lower frequencies, Carya pallida and Rhododendron viscosum. The herbaceous layer is sparse, generally Chimaphila maculata and Pteridium aquilinum are present at low cover. This forest experiences lower fire frequency than other forest types of the pine barrens, as it is more protected and more mesic. The primary distribution of this forest is south of the Mullica River in southern New Jersey.
