Description: This community is a weakly minerotrophic or perhaps ombrotrophic peatland dominated by tall, deciduous, ericaceous shrubs and peat mosses. The water is usually nutrient poor and acidic. The dominant shrub is usually Vaccinium corymbosum. Other associated shrubs include Photinia melanocarpa (= Aronia melanocarpa), Gaylussacia baccata, Ilex verticillata, and Nemopanthus mucronatus. Characteristic herbs include Calla palustris, Carex trisperma, Osmunda cinnamomea, Sarracenia purpurea, and Maianthemum trifolium (= Smilacina trifolia). Characteristic peat mosses include Sphagnum centrale, Sphagnum fimbriatum, Sphagnum magellanicum, and Sphagnum capillifolium (= Sphagnum nemoreum). Stunted trees, including Acer rubrum, may be present at a low density and less than 25% cover.
