Description: This is a narrowly distributed alliance, found in narrow, sandstone box-canyons of the Colorado Plateau region. Elevations are reported to be less than 1860 m. Stands are found on immediate riverbanks, within 2 m of the active channel. The stream channel is highly sinuous with well-developed sandy point bars (Rosgen's Channel Type: C5). Soils are shallow to deep (up to 1.5 m) sands, or loam over cobbles. This alliance is dominated by ~Acer negundo$ in the tree canopy, with 40-70% cover, and ~Betula occidentalis$ in the shrub canopy. Other common shrub species include ~Forestiera pubescens, Salix exigua$, and the vine ~Clematis ligusticifolia$. The herbaceous layer is generally sparse, but occasionally with high cover of ~Poa pratensis, Equisetum hyemale$, and ~Phalaris arundinacea (= Phalaroides arundinacea)$. Adjacent riparian and upland vegetation is ~Salix exigua$-dominated shrublands and ~Pinus edulis - Juniperus osteosperma$ woodlands, respectively.
