Description: This pine-hardwoods community is found in the 'Driftless Region' of southeastern Minnesota, United States. Stands occur on moist, steep north-facing slopes with thin soils, and are usually associated with cliffs, talus slopes, and bedrock outcrops. The tree canopy includes any combination of Abies balsamea, Betula alleghaniensis, and Pinus strobus. The shrub layer contains Acer spicatum, Taxus canadensis, and Viburnum opulus var. americanum (= Viburnum trilobum). Characteristic herbaceous species include Allium cernuum, Equisetum scirpoides, Streptopus lanceolatus var. longipes (= Streptopus roseus), and, more rarely, Cornus canadensis.
